We take a look inside a Home Affairs office equipped with the Live Capture system used to issue Smart IDs.

The Department of Home Affairs recently confirmed that offices around the country were issuing Smart IDs to all citizens, not only pensioners and first-time applicants.

“Office managers have the prerogative to allow clients to apply for Smart ID cards on the basis of the volumes of 16-year-old and pensioner clients on the day,” the department said.

There are almost 140 Home Affairs offices around South Africa equipped with the Live Capture system used to issue Smart IDs, with another 40 set to come online by the end of March 2016.

FNB and Standard Bank have also partnered with Home Affairs on a pilot project to issue Smart IDs from bank branches.

They are currently testing the system with employees, with the second phase of the trial set to kick off in late November.
